Choose Your Species
Pick an animal (or mix!) that resonates with you. Popular choices include foxes, wolves, dragons, and big cats — but any species works. Even mythical or original species are fully valid.
Your fursona is your identity in the furry fandom — a character that represents you. Here's everything you need to create yours from scratch, step by step.
Follow these six steps to go from a blank canvas to a fully realised fursona ready to introduce to the fandom.
Pick an animal (or mix!) that resonates with you. Popular choices include foxes, wolves, dragons, and big cats — but any species works. Even mythical or original species are fully valid.
Choose a colour palette that feels like you. Bold and vibrant? Soft and pastel? Classic naturalistic tones? Think about markings, patterns, and any distinguishing features.
Your fursona's personality can mirror your own, be an idealised version of yourself, or be entirely separate. Write down a few core traits, quirks, and backstory notes to bring them to life.
A ref sheet shows your fursona from multiple angles with colour swatches and notes. You can sketch one yourself or commission an artist — this document follows you everywhere in the fandom.
Your fursona's name can be your own, a variation of it, something entirely new, or even a species pun. Many furries use their fursona's name as their community handle.
Post your fursona in the ChatFurry Art Den, get feedback, find other furries with the same species, and start meeting your pack. The community loves welcoming new fursonas!
Not at all. Some furries make their fursona a reflection of themselves; others make them a completely separate character. Both are completely valid approaches.
Absolutely. Many furries have multiple — called "sonas" — for different moods, communities, or creative projects. There's no limit.
No. A simple description, a hand-drawn sketch, or even a text bio is enough to have a fursona. Art helps, but it's never required to get started.
Yes! "Original species" (or "closed species") are a big part of furry culture. You can invent any creature you like, or adopt an existing original species from another creator.
The ChatFurry community loves meeting new fursonas. Jump into the Art Den, post your character, and find your place in the pack today.
